3 Broadway Musicals You Must See in Chicago this Spring

Did you know Chicago is the biggest market for Broadway shows/musicals outside of New York? And even some musicals start out in Chicago and go on to make their Broadway debut in New York?

After over a year of no performances, I’m so happy that live theater performances are back in Chicago. It’s so great to see the Theatre District in the Loop full of theatre-goers and fans. And I’m so happy that I have had the opportunity to experience some amazing Broadway in Chicago shows.

I’ve mentioned this before (in my previous blog posts) but I just want to reiterate that there is always something to do in Chicago, and the lineup of Broadway shows in Chicago is always too good to past up. So whether you live in Chicago or visiting Chicago this spring, I highly recommend seeing a Broadway in Chicago show. Here are three Broadway in Chicago shows you cannot miss this spring!

Moulin Rouge! The Musical

I went to opening night of Moulin Rouge! The Musical last month and was blown away with the performance, cast, song and stage. I’ve seen Moulin Rouge, the movie, but I must admit, I love the live performance more. I love the music the most and sang along the whole time! I loved it so much, I shared a Instagram Reels video about it here.

In case you are not familiar with the Moulin Rouge storyline, it takes place in Paris in 1889 when Christian, a young Englishman, falls in love with Satine, a singer at the Moulin Rouge. But the romance turns into somewhat of a love triangle because Satine is in a relationship with a Duke, who funds the Moulin Rouge theater/production. Christian and Satine have a secret relationship but Satine is also keeping a fatal secret from everyone.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a great for Francophiles, a girls’ night out and even date night.

Playing at the James M. Nederlander Theatre (24 W. Randolph) from March 19 – May 14, 2022. 2 hours 35 minutes runtime with an intermission.

SIX the Musical

Talk about “girl power”! SIX the Musical is just that! The entire performance is performed by women, including the musicians. SIX the Musical was like an upbeat pop concert with a history lesson for me. It kept me engaged and got me down the rabbit hole researching Henry VIII and his wives afterwards.

SIX the Musical is about all six wives of Henry VIII. Each wife shares her experience during the marriage. Each performance has so much personality and performed like a pop performance. The show debuted at Chicago’s Shakespeare Theatre a few years ago and moved onto Broadway (which was a big hit). Now SIX the Musical is back where it all started! See my @secondcitymom Instagram Reels video for SIX the Musical here.

SIX the Musical is perfect for a night out with your girlfriends or daughters or just about anyone!

Playing at CIBC Theatre (18 W. Monroe) from March 29 – July 3, 2022. 80 minutes runtime with no intermission.

Teatro Zinzanni

I’ve been raving about Teatro Zinzanni since I saw back in August. The show includes a 3-course dinner so it’s perfect for date night or a group get together. I loved that the show is in what they call the Spiegeltent ZaZou, a circular room with 400 mirrors. Let me just say it’s beautiful inside. More on my @secondcitymom Instagram post here.

The best way for me to describe Teatro Zinzanni is that it’s a cross between a circus, cabaret, and wedding reception. There’s really no storyline but lots of physical comedy and great singing by a very talented cast. It was such a unique experience and show!

Playing at the Cambria Hotel (32 W. Randolph). 2 hours and 30 minutes runtime.
